How does CBD work and what is it? Put very simply, CBD is short for Cannabidiol. Cannabidiol is a cannabinoid found in the Cannabis plant.
It’s can be confusing, but we are going to look further into CBD, the Cannabis plant and how it all works on this page. The easiest way to understand is to run a timeline of what CBD is and how it’s produced.
The plants – where CBD comes from
You have most likely heard of Cannabis. There are three species of plant Cannabis Sativa, Cannabis Indica, and Cannabis Ruderalis. But to keep things simple, we will be focussing on Cannabis Sativa.
Cannabis Sativa grows in two varieties Hemp and Marijuana. The difference between the pair is the THC content. When Marijuana grows, it contains significantly more THC than Hemp. Hemp will tend to produce 0.3% or less. When Marijuana and hemp grow, 113 cannabinoids are produced within the plant – including CBD (Cannabidiol). We then need to extract CBD from the plant, ready for us humans to ingest!
How does the CBD Distillation process work?
There are a few ways to extract CBD from Cannabis, but we will focus on Distillation as this is the process, we use at Signature CBD.
Distillation in simple terms is the way we remove other compounds from the raw materials. The oil can contain undesired cannabinoids (THC) and we can remove these compounds by boiling it at different temperatures. Once boiled at the correct temperature, the CBD will evaporate and separate from the other compounds. Once it condensates and rinses it will eventually leave a golden CBD oil ready to be used in a variety of products such as CBD oil tinctures, CBD Gummies, CBD Sprays and many more!
This process will normally produce Broad-Spectrum CBD which includes all the healthy cannabinoids and terpenes with 0%THC. To ensure you have a product you can believe in and trust, we run the distillation process twice. This will give you 100% confidence your product contains 0% THC and is legal & compliant.
How does CBD work?
So now, we know the difference between Hemp and Marijuana, we know how Signature CBD is extracted and we’ve bought our first Signature Tincture (hopefully). But how does CBD work?
It all comes down to a system found in the human body called the Endocannabinoid System. The Endocannabinoid system is vital for regulating a variety of measures in the human body. There are two main receptors in the Endocannabinoid System – CB1 and CB2 receptors.
Found mostly in the brain and central nervous system. They are an important aspect to keeping a healthy brain. To give you some context, they assist in regulating Memory, Appetite, Thinking, Mood and even pain!
Found all over and work throughout our bodies. Eg, Immune System and Muscular System. One of the main responsibilities of CB2 Receptors is to monitor inflammation. That doesn’t just apply to sore leg muscles after a gym session but anything that could cause discomfort, like inflamed gut or Arthritis for example.
It’s not proven that CBD binds with the receptors, but research indicates it stimulates the Endocannabinoid System and promotes the binding process of our own internal endocannabinoids (Anandamide and 2-AG) to enhance homeostasis and potentially promote the following benefits:
Inflammation Pain (including Arthritis)
This therapeutic compound CBD has potentially many more benefits and is the reason it’s become so popular over the past couple of years.
